Well inspections look at the private well a house depends on, and Cornell Cooperative Extension recommends a yearly check.

Well shocking disinfects a well with chlorine after bacteria turn up or after a repair, and a retest follows.

I just had a home inspection with Chuck, and he was great. He was very thorough and explained everything clearly as he went through the house. He answered all my questions, pointed out things I wouldn't have noticed, and even offered to look up additional info afterward. He made the process easy to understand and much less stressful. I'd definitely recommend Chuck to anyone buying a home.

Chuck is great to work with. He's inspected two houses my husband and I have offered on and his report saved us from investing in a home with serious water problems in the basement, and helped us feel reassured about the second home we offered on. He's also taught me a lot, and as a new homeowner, that's especially valuable! Thanks Chuck!

Chuck is amazing! First time meeting him and it felt like you knew him forever! Replied quickly and was able to get me within short notice. Did a septic inspection for me and was very knowledgeable within the field. Would highly recommend him to anyone doing a home/septic inspection.

As first-time home buyers, we really appreciated how thorough Chuck was with our inspection. He explained everything in detail, answered all of our questions, and made the process easy to understand. He even got us scheduled the very next day after we called. Highly recommend Above Grade Home Inspections!
Why Us
We explain what the lab found in plain terms and shock the well when a test calls for it.

Questions
New York's health department says to test a private well for bacteria at least once a year and after any repair or disinfection, and for other contaminants every three to five years. Test right away if the water changes in look, smell, or taste, or after a flood. A well and a septic system often share a yard, so pair the test with a septic system inspection. Before digging near either one, underground utility locating can mark the buried lines.
You can collect a sample for your own peace of mind, but New York's health department says it should go to a lab certified by the state's Environmental Laboratory Approval Program. For a sale in Westchester County, the county law requires the sample to be taken by a certified lab's own staff or its authorized representative.
The cost depends on how many contaminants the lab checks for, how hard the sample is to collect, and how far the home is from the lab. For a home sale in Westchester County, where the county requires a set list of tests, its health department has estimated the cost of that testing at $400 to $450 on average. For a new well, New York's health department lists tests that include coliform bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead, iron, manganese, sodium, chloride, hardness, and pH. A well near a heavily salted road should also be checked for total dissolved solids, the salts and minerals carried in the water. Water testing can be added to a home inspection, the same way radon testing can.
New York's health department names late spring or early summer as the best time to test a private well. Floods can carry surface water into a well, so test again after one.
