Fireplace Inspection
Fireplace inspections check the visible parts of a fireplace, its hearth, and its chimney.
Chimney, fireplace, and flue inspections for Wallkill-area homes before a sale or the heating season.
Our Services

Fireplace inspections check the visible parts of a fireplace, its hearth, and its chimney.

Chimney flue inspections look for flaking or cracked flue tiles, which moisture and temperature swings often cause.

Level 2 inspections go beyond a basic check to the reachable attic, crawl space, and basement at a sale.

I just had a home inspection with Chuck, and he was great. He was very thorough and explained everything clearly as he went through the house. He answered all my questions, pointed out things I wouldn't have noticed, and even offered to look up additional info afterward. He made the process easy to understand and much less stressful. I'd definitely recommend Chuck to anyone buying a home.

Chuck is great to work with. He's inspected two houses my husband and I have offered on and his report saved us from investing in a home with serious water problems in the basement, and helped us feel reassured about the second home we offered on. He's also taught me a lot, and as a new homeowner, that's especially valuable! Thanks Chuck!

Chuck is amazing! First time meeting him and it felt like you knew him forever! Replied quickly and was able to get me within short notice. Did a septic inspection for me and was very knowledgeable within the field. Would highly recommend him to anyone doing a home/septic inspection.

Chuck was amazing. Meeting him for the first time he demonstrated a great deal of knowledge with home inspections. He explained what he was looking at. What was problematic and of no concern. He took his time and was very thorough. He answered all the questions we had and made us feel comfortable throughout the whole inspection.

As first-time home buyers, we really appreciated how thorough Chuck was with our inspection. He explained everything in detail, answered all of our questions, and made the process easy to understand. He even got us scheduled the very next day after we called. Highly recommend Above Grade Home Inspections!
Why Us
We hold a chimney inspector certification, so a chimney inspection goes past the visible check every home inspection makes along with the roof.

Questions
Signs you can see include cracked or crumbling mortar on the chimney crown, flaking brick, white chalky staining on the masonry, and rusted dampers. A strong fireplace smell on humid summer days is another clue: air pulled down the flue carries the smell of creosote, the tarry residue smoke leaves inside a chimney.
It is the middle of the three inspection levels in the national fire protection standard for chimneys. Chimney trade guidance calls for a Level 2 when a home is sold, when a heating appliance is added or the fuel changes, and after anything likely to have damaged the chimney. It adds the reachable parts of the attic, crawl space, and basement. For a sale, it can be booked alongside radon testing or a termite inspection.
The cost depends on the level of inspection, how many flues the chimney has, and how easy the roof is to reach. Fixr's August 2025 cost guide puts a typical chimney inspection at $100 to $500 nationally. A chimney inspection can be booked with a home inspection or on its own. Get a free quote for yours.
A home inspection covers only the visible parts. New York's standards require a home inspector to report on the visible chimney, flue, and damper, but not to look inside the flue or run a smoke test. A standard home inspection looks at the chimney as part of the roof, and a chimney inspection goes further.
At least once a year, under the national fire protection standard for chimneys, and that includes chimneys serving gas or oil heat. New York's seller disclosure form also asks about known chimney, fireplace, or stove defects, so an inspection before a sale helps answer it.
